Question 1

Can I get my results over the phone?

Accepted Answer

Reception cannot give clinical results by phone. Results need to be explained in context, and identity is hard to confirm over the phone. Book a short appointment, or a telehealth consult if you are eligible.

Question 2

If I don't hear anything, does that mean it's normal?

Accepted Answer

Do not rely on it. The practice contacts patients when a result needs attention, but messages can go astray. Booking a follow-up when the test is ordered is the safe approach.

Question 3

How long do results take?

Accepted Answer

Most blood tests are back within a few days. Cultures and specialised tests can take one to two weeks. Imaging reports usually take a few days.

Question 4

The clinic rang and asked me to come in. Is it bad news?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily. Many recalls are for small adjustments or repeat testing. It does mean something needs a decision, so book the soonest appointment you can.

Question 5

Can I see my results in My Health Record?

Accepted Answer

Many results appear there unless you have opted out, and you can view them through myGov. They sometimes appear before your GP has reviewed them, so a result without context is worth waiting to discuss.

Question 6

One of my numbers was flagged. Should I worry?

Accepted Answer

Flags mark anything outside the reference range, and around one healthy person in twenty sits slightly outside a given range. What matters is the size, the trend and whether it fits your symptoms — which is what the appointment is for.

Question 7

Can I get copies of my results to take to a specialist?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Ask at your appointment or speak to reception about the practice's records process.
