Which contraception is most effective?

Long-acting reversible methods — implants and intrauterine devices — because their effectiveness does not depend on remembering anything daily. All are fully reversible.

When should I start folate?

Three months before you begin trying, where possible, and continuing through the first trimester. If you are already pregnant and have not started, start now.

How long should we try before getting help?

Twelve months if you are under 35, six months from 35 onwards — sooner if periods are irregular or absent, or there is known endometriosis, pelvic infection or previous pelvic surgery.

Do both of us need testing for fertility?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Around a third of difficulty relates to male factors, a third to female factors, and a third to both or neither. Assessing only one partner commonly wastes months.

I'm pregnant and I don't know what I want to do. What happens?

You will be given factual, non-directive information about all the options — continuing, adoption or foster care, and termination — along with the timeframes that apply, and referral wherever you decide. The decision is yours.

Can I get emergency contraception?

Accepted Answer

Emergency contraceptive pills are available from pharmacies without a prescription and work best taken as soon as possible. A copper IUD within five days is the most effective option and continues as ongoing contraception — ring us to discuss it.

Can I see a female doctor?

Yes — just say so when you book. Seven of our GPs are female.
