Do I need to use drops before I come?

Yes, where you safely can — three to five days of olive oil or a pharmacy wax softener makes the procedure far more likely to work. Do not use drops if you have a perforated eardrum, grommets, ear pain or discharge.

Does it hurt?

It should not. It feels warm and noisy, and can be briefly dizzying. Tell the person doing it straight away if you feel pain and they will stop.

How long does it take?

About fifteen minutes for a standard appointment including the examination. Stubborn wax sometimes needs a second visit after more softening.

Can everyone have their ears syringed?

No. It is not done with a perforated eardrum, grommets, previous ear surgery, active infection, ear pain, or if you hear from only one ear. Your GP will examine first and refer for microsuction if that is safer.

Is it bulk billed?

Yes, for patients with a valid Medicare card. Softening drops from the pharmacy are the only cost.

My hearing didn't improve after the wax came out. Why?

Then wax was not the cause. Fluid behind the eardrum, an infection, or age-related hearing loss are common alternatives, and your GP will arrange a hearing test or referral.

Are cotton buds really that bad?

Yes. They push wax deeper and compact it against the eardrum, which is the usual reason people end up needing this appointment. Ear candles do not work either and have caused burns and perforations.

My ear suddenly went deaf. Should I wait for an appointment?

Accepted Answer

No — ring the clinic the same day. Sudden hearing loss in one ear, particularly with dizziness, needs urgent assessment.
