Will it hurt?

The local anaesthetic injection stings for a few seconds. After that the area is numb and you will feel pressure but not sharpness. If you feel anything sharp during the procedure, say so and more anaesthetic can be given.

Should I stop my blood thinner first?

Do not stop any medication yourself. Tell your GP what you take and they will advise — for many people stopping carries more risk than the bleeding does.

Will there be a scar?

Yes. Every excision leaves a scar. How it looks depends on the site, your skin and aftercare. Your GP will tell you what is realistic for that location before you consent.

Can I drive home?

Usually yes, since you are awake and only the local area is numb. If the site is on a hand, arm or somewhere that makes steering awkward, arrange a lift.

When can I shower?

Keep the dressing dry for the period you are told, generally 24 to 48 hours. You will get written instructions for your specific wound.

How long until I get the pathology result?

About a week. You will be booked back in to be told in person, because the report needs explaining and the next step depends on it.

What if it wasn't completely removed?

The pathology report describes the margins. If the lesion extends to an edge, your GP will explain whether further excision or a referral is needed.

Can I have several lesions done at once?

Sometimes, depending on size and location. Raise it when you book so enough time is set aside.
